Study in Western Europe

This is where Europe’s best-known research universities sit. In Germany’s case, you can attend one of them for little more than an administrative fee. Western Europe rewards students who want a recognised name, a serious research environment and a direct line into internships and graduate employment. Spain adds Barcelona and Madrid: historic universities at moderate public fees.

Why Western Europe, in three numbers

The figures that matter when you are weighing Western Europe against everywhere else.

  1. 14Of the world’s top 100 universities World-leading universities Switzerland, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Belgium hold fourteen places in the QS world top 100 between them, ETH Zurich among them at eighth. Degrees from here are recognised everywhere. QS World University Rankings 2027
  2. 14 of 16German states charging no tuition Tuition-free in most of Germany Public universities in fourteen of Germany’s sixteen states charge no tuition, to international and domestic students alike. The exceptions are Baden-Württemberg, at €1,500 a semester for non-EU students, and Bavaria, where TU München charges non-EU students €2,000–€6,000 a semester. A semester contribution of roughly €100–€400 applies everywhere. Eurydice, European Commission
  3. 40%European average for internships Employability About 40% of students across Europe complete at least one internship during their degree, and both Germany and the Netherlands sit above that average: in many degrees there, a placement is built into the structure. EUROSTUDENT 8, 2024

Where our students apply and get in

Leading options in Western Europe, with the English-taught strengths and tuition you should plan around.

A PhD in Europe is usually paid work, not a tuition bill. Most universities in Europe treat a PhD as employment rather than study: doctoral candidates are not charged tuition and are paid a salary, where the position carries teaching and research duties. The particular stipend or salary is set by the university and the doctoral program, and is communicated to you once you have chosen the program you are applying to.
